The Watermark actions began with a silent procession through the city in 2007, casting a line of sunflower seeds to mark what Seattle’s downtown shoreline would look like in the case of a 20 foot rise in sea level. We followed this action with a series of visuals and performances in other parts of the city, using various ephemeral materials to mark the impact of sea level rise.
We then produced a series of travel posters, based on vintage travel posters, that highlighted the impacts of climate change on special places around the US. The work was featured in the show “Forecast: Communicating Weather and Climate” at the Seattle Convention Center, curated by Lele Barnett.
Finally, Nicole and I produced Last Chance Travel, an ersatz travel agency in a downtown storefront. Darkly funny (mostly just dark), LCT featured work from a number of artists and functioned as a gathering space to talk about climate impacts.
Exhibiting artists, participants, and lecturers:
Leila Anderson and Clara Tilve – Film
Bob Anderton – Legal Disclaimer
Briar Bates – Handbags for Black Friday
Vaughn Bell – “Special Agent”, Surrogate Island
Anne Blackburn – Invasive Species, Lecturer
Mackenzie Funk – Lecturer

Jesse Paul Miller – Audio for Staycation Station
