This artwork is a recognition that humans are a part of nature, and a tribute to all the people who literally and metaphorically carry the water for their families and communities. Together, we transformed this little riverbank park. In just a day and a half, the DirtCorps superheros removed the 10 foot tall blackberry hedge that blocked the view of the river. In its place, volunteers and I created a cluster of living willow baskets and a living fence flowing along the riverbank. The fence is an adapted version of an erosion control technique called spiling. Daniel Collins of Nicoterra Trails helped immensely with the technical and safety aspects of the spiling, which entailed working over the edge of a very steep riverbank.
This is an ongoing project which we hope to expand and steward over time.
